The benefits of a good night's sleep are widely known. UC San Francisco neurologists have found that the animal brain strengthens motor skills during deep sleep.

During non-REM sleep, short brain waves sustain some selected neural interconnections that are directly related to a task that was previously learned while awake, weakening the neural connections that are not connected to this learning.

These findings could lead to the development of machinery that can help the brain manage these connections.

The results confirm that there are neural connections relevant to new tasks and that they are re-examined during sleep. This allows us to refine the performance.
Furthermore, this is the first evidence that neural reactivation and healing - strengthening and weakening - occur together during deep sleep.

The study was conducted on mice. Healthy mice had to learn to use a mechanism that provided them with water for survival. Other mice with disabilities had to learn to improve walking using other types of mechanisms.
