A week of camping, without artificial lights, synchronizes the natural circadian rhythms

Electric light is one of the most important human inventions. Sleep and other daily rhythms in physiology and behavior, however, evolved following natural light-dark cycles.

Electric lighting is thought to have disturbed these rhythms.

HEALTH PROBLEM NO.1: ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS.

However, how much the era of electric lighting altered the human circadian clock is not known. In this small trial it is shown that electric lighting and building environment are associated with reduced exposure to sunlight during the day.
In addition, it turns out that after exposure to natural sunlight, the internal circadian clock (circadian rhythms) just synchronizes with solar time so that the internal biological night occurs at sunset and the end of the internal biological night. check before the wake-up time immediately after sunrise.

Furthermore, we believe that the chronotypes "late"Show great progress by resynchronizing circadian rhythms when exposed only to natural light, changing the timing of their internal clocks relative to the light-dark cycle, anticipating sleep and wake-up calls."

These findings have important implications for understanding how modern light exposure patterns help plan for sleep onset delays and can interfere with sleep and sleep clocks.

All this was possible to learn by simply letting 8 subjects go camping, without artificial lights, for just one week.
